NGC1491 - the Fossil Footprint Nebula is a HII emission nebula approx. 10,700 light year away in the constellation of Perseus.
The nebula is illuminated by an 11th magnitude star BD+50 866 which can be seen inside a partial bubble, near the bright core. The bubble is similar to NGC7635. High intensity ultra violet radiation from this O5 type star has ionised the surrounding hydrogen gas with the material ejected from it creating the bubble and curtain fold effects.
The nebula was discovered in 1790 by William Herschel.
