NGC7000 - the North American nebula, is a large HII emission nebula about 2 × 3° in size, situated in the constellation of Cygnus and located 2,590 light-years from Earth.
The nebula, which get's it's name because of it's shape, is part of a HII region which also contains the adjacent Pelican nebula (IC5070). The two are separated by large amounts of dust, which in the visible spectrum obscures the hot (40,000°) star responsible for the ionisation of the nebula.
The Cygnus Wall region (which resembles the Gulf of Mexico) has a high rate of star formation.
