M45 - The Pleiades a.k.a the Seven Sisters is an spectacular open cluster associated with a reflection nebula. Nine of the brightest stars are named after characters from Greek mysthology:- Titan Atlas, Oceanid Pleione and their seven daughters (Alcyone, Merope, Electra, Maia, Celaeno, Taygeta & Asterope). Although dominated by these nine hot blue stars the cluster contains over 200 stars and was formed within the last 100 million years.
The reflection nebulosity is caused by light from the cluster scattering off an unrelated dust cloud, which the stars are passing through.
Situated in the constellation of Taurus, the cluster is naked-eye visible, although with the light pollution in Leeds it appears as a faint fuzzy patch.
